Surface Wave Developments under Tropical Cyclone Goni (2020): Multi-Satellite Observations and Parametric Model Comparisons

چکیده
Over the Philippine Sea, tropical cyclone (TC) Goni reaches category 5 on 29–31 October 2020. Multi-satellite observations, including CFOSAT SWIM/SCAT and Sentinel-1 SAR data, are jointly analyzed to assess performances of a parametric model. Recently developed provide fast estimation surface wave developments under rapidly evolving TCs, this full 2D model (KYCM) its simplified self-similar solutions (TC-wave geophysical function (TCW GMF)) thoroughly compared with satellite observations. TCW GMF provides immediate first-guess estimates, at any location in space time, for significant height, wavelength, direction parameters. Moving cyclones trigger strong asymmetrical fields, associated resonance between group velocity TC heading velocity. For Goni, effect is well evidenced captured, leading extreme waves reaching up 8 m, further outrunning as swell systems wavelengths about 200–250 m direction, slightly shifted leftwards. Considering wind field constrained very highly resolved measurements medium resolution SCAT quantitative agreements KYCM/TCW results obtained. Far from inner core (∼10 radii maximum speed), superposition local estimates leads Hs values close altimeter measurements. This case study demonstrates promising capabilities combine multi-satellite analytical advance improved understandings generation conditions.

Recent developments in tropical cyclone analysis using observations and high resolution models
Affecting scores of people with seemingly insurmountable and unmanageable costs, tropical cyclones (TCs) are one of the most devastating extreme weather events. In this special issue, we highlight and summarize some of the recent studies that make use of detailed observations and high-resolution numerical models to analyze tropical cyclones from their genesis to post-landfall impacts. Focused a...
متن کاملA Review of Parametric Descriptions of Tropical Cyclone Wind-Wave Generation
More than three decades of observations of tropical cyclone wind and wave fields have resulted in a detailed understanding of wave-growth dynamics, although details of the physics are still lacking. These observations are presented in a consistent manner, which provides the basis to be able to characterize the full wave spectrum in a parametric form throughout tropical cyclones. The data clearl...
متن کاملDetermining Tropical Cyclone Surface Wind Speed Structure and Intensity with the CYGNSS Satellite Constellation
The Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) consists of a constellation of eight microsatellites that provide observations of surface wind speed in all precipitating conditions. A method for estimating tropical cyclone (TC) metrics—maximum surface wind speed VMAX, radius of maximum surface wind speed RMAX, and wind radii (R64, R50, and R34)—from CYGNSS observations is developed and ...
متن کاملTropical cyclone intensification trends during satellite era (1986–2010)
[1] Using International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS, version v03r03) analysis during satellite era (1986–2010) we determined the trends of intensification of tropical cyclones (TC) over all the global basins, except the North Indian Ocean. Over all the basins, the rate of TC intensification from 64 kt to first peak of intensity maxima (global average value = 104 kt) was ...
